Breastfeeding Support

Having breastfed my own two children for 15 months and also bottle fed them, I know exactly what it is that a mother wants when she says that she needs help.

Breastfeeding may be the biological norm for feeding our babies, but it certainly doesn't always come naturally.  It's a skill.  A skill that requires practice, many attempts, time to perfect and the ability to change with our baby's needs.

I've been a voluntary breastfeeding peer supporter since February 2014 and twice weekly have given my services in both children's centres, my local hospital's postnatal ward, in NICU and with my Infant Feeding Team.  There is very little about breastfeeding, a parent's initial struggle and desire to breastfeed that I have not witnessed or supported and whilst I am not a clinically trained tongue tie practitioner, I am usually able to spot a tongue tie and connect the mother with her local practitioner to resolve her issues.

My local unit is funding my training as a Breastfeeding Counsellor with the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers, such is their belief in me, my ability and my experience.

I have facilitated many of the NCT Feeding sessions in my Antenatal Courses and all the time have promoted a parent's mental well-being as the main reason for ensuring good quality support and kindness.

I have over the past 6½ years built up a strong reputation within my local Hospital Trust and midwives, health visitors, paediatricians, gp's all seek my thoughts, advice and support for the mums that they see.

I am in the process of assisting for a Grant for a research project that my local trust is applying for based on my Blog post.

I am known locally as kind, supportive and help mums daily to achieve their dreams of breastfeeding painlessly and as a huge achievement.  For this reason, the local breastfeeding rates are amongst the highest in the country and I am often attributed to that success.

In all these years of breastfeeding support, I have never (and will continue never) touch a mother's breast.  There is simply no need and it does not empower a mother, but leaves her wondering what it was that the professional did and how can she do it herself at 3am.

Empowerment is all about helping the mother work our her needs, her desires and her ability to achieve.  That is at the heart of my work. That is why those that I've supported usually become breastfeeding peer supporters themselves so that they in turn can pay it forward.

If you're looking for a non-judgemental, kind, supportive, listening help, then get in touch.

I'm happy to do online support or come to your home.
